THE LULL BETWEEN show seasons is a good time to send your horse trailer for a thorough checkup. One of the leading causes of trailer accidents (let alone the inconvenience of breakdowns) is lack of trailer maintenance.

In addition to having a good roadside assistance program, a checkup is paramount. According to U.S. Rider magazine, the following points are included in maintaining your trailer:

Inspect wheels, hubs and brake drums.

Inspect suspension.

Check brake magnets with an ohmmeter. Best levels are 3.2; otherwise they should be replaced.

Lubricate all moving parts.

Remove any rust.

Inspect oil grease seals.

Inspect and grease wheel bearings.

Check tires including the spare for dry rot.

Check electrical wiring.

Inspect the floor.

Replace or repair worn or broken parts.

Now you are ready for another season of hauling with absolute peace of mind.
